Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II: Completing a Doctoral Degree at 17

Dr. Dorothy Jean Tillman II, a Chicago native, has achieved remarkable academic success at an exceptionally young age. After years of hard work and dedication, Dorothy walked the stage to earn her Doctoral Degree, marking a significant milestone in her educational journey.

Early Academic Journey

Dorothy was home-schooled before entering college at just 10 years old. In 2020, she earned a Master of Science degree, and a year later, at age 15, she was accepted into the Doctorate of Behavioral Health Management program at Arizona State University (ASU). In December 2023, at the age of 17, Dorothy successfully defended her dissertation to earn her doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from ASU’s College of Health Solutions. On May 6, 2024, history was made as Dorothy walked at ASU’s spring commencement ceremony.

Family Influence and Inspiration

Dorothy has always held education in high regard, influenced by her family’s background. Her grandmother, Dorothy Jean Tillman, is a significant figure in the Chicago area, known for her role as an American politician, civil rights activist, and former Chicago alderman. Serving as the alderman of the city’s 3rd Ward from 1985 until 2007, her grandmother instilled in Dorothy the importance of education and lifelong learning.

“People in my life like my grandmother, who was part of the Civil Rights movement, consistently emphasized the importance of education and lifelong learning,” Dorothy said. “But my personal drive for education comes from my own desire to explore and learn new things.”

Academic Excellence at ASU

Dr. Lesly Manson, a Clinical Associate Professor at ASU, stated that Dorothy is the youngest person in school history to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health. During her studies, Dorothy published a journal article based on her dissertation and completed an internship at a university student health center. Dr. Manson highlighted Dorothy’s leadership in reducing healthcare stigma and improving student health services.

“She really led change and worked on different forms of management to reduce healthcare stigma,” Dr. Manson said. “It was wonderful to see her navigate personal and professional interactions and grow through those experiences.”

Dr. Manson described Dorothy as an “inquisitive” and “innovative” student, emphasizing the rarity and significance of her accomplishments. “Dorothy has innovative ideas and motivation, embodying the true meaning of leadership,” she added.

Personal Motivations and Future Aspirations

Dorothy credits her success to the support of her mother, whom she describes as one of her biggest motivators. “Seeing my mother work so hard to uphold our family’s legacy and be the person everyone could rely on inspired me to become an accomplished person,” Dorothy said.

Driven by her passion for learning, Dorothy has also ventured into entrepreneurship. She is the founder and CEO of a leadership institute that emphasizes the arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). “I believe integrating art with STEM makes learning exciting for kids and opens them up to endless possibilities,” she explained.

Dorothy hopes her story will inspire young people to continually explore and discover their passions in life. “It’s OK to figure out what you want to do continually,” she said.
